The New Foresters (formerly The Foresters Arms) first opened in around 1891. The venue has been known to Nottingham locals as a gay pub since 1938. This was during a time where homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom. It has been said that both gay men and women would discreetly enter a private room round the back of the building. In most recent years, Debbie Law became the landlady in 2001. During Debbie’s time at the venue The New Foresters gained a lot of recognition as Nottingham’s number one safe space. This was due to her hard work, commitment and love and respect for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2019, the venue was awarded the pink plaque by the Nottingham Civic Society – a very proud moment for The New Foresters. This was also official recognition as being an LGBTQ+ safe space. After 22 years as the landlady Debbie retired in May 2022, when the new Landlord Brent Foster took over as the most recent custodian. Brent too possesses a huge amount of love for the LGBTQ+ community and is proud to be offering a safe space for all to come and enjoy. Since taking over he has renovated the venue to a high standard and continues to work hard to keep the venue alive and welcoming for all. In 2024 The New Foresters will host the very first Trans Pride.
